Royal tour 1954; Main Street parade, Mangaroa School group.

PhotographerUnknownDescriptionGroup of children and adults parading down Main Street, Upper Hutt, during the Royal visit of Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh, 1953-1954. There are people lining the side of the road, most of them with Union Jack flags. A placard with 'Mangaroa School' written on it can be seen. In the background are buildings with bunting. At the top left hand corner of photograph is a sign for the Shell Service Station. Also visible is a shop sign that says 'Jacobs'.

The first building at right is the Council Chamber, with a temporary dais added; next door is the Gospel Hall, which was built in 1913. By mid-1955 a new Gospel Hall was in use; the old hall had burnt down.
